Shane’s eyes also caught upon the fine figure of the beautiful young woman, and Finn concealed a sly smirk as he acknowledged the other boy’s good taste. One thing the school did provide was superfluous eye candy for the males, something that Finlay was forever grateful for and was sure Shane would soon feel the same. He wondered silently what Felicity Stonebridge was doing befriending someone so nice and genuine in the first place, as she was often associated more with the ‘bad boys’ and even then she could still break their steel encrusted hearts like they meant nothing to her. Finn had watched one of his own friends fall prey to her wily ways, lead astray by her flirtatious nature and her self-confidence over the summer, no doubt fell too hard for the girl and was still suffering the consequences. Shane would be probably be fine as long as he didn’t start getting feelings for Flick, and didn’t ask too many questions about her background.
Naturally Shane was intrigued; who wouldn’t be when they were told their new friend was not who they thought they were? Though, Finn was still resilient that it was better for him to find these things out sooner rather than later, even if he was knocking down Shane’s opinion of the girl with a few choice words. “I’m surprised she didn’t have a cigarette in hand when you met her.” He commented offhandedly as Shane processed the information slowly, appearing surprised at everything he had reeled off to him as though she had presented herself as an entirely different person to the one known around Forks. He saw the resignation set in, though he still held that flicker of hope as he asked, ”Really?”, which suggested he wanted to believe otherwise. “I wish it wasn’t true, it’s sad to see someone as young as her screwing her life up like it doesn’t matter.” He answered solemnly, casting his eyes around to see that almost the whole grounds had been evacuated from teachers and students alike.
Finn’s hasty cigarette was beginning to wear off already, the nicotine satiated feeling he had only minutes ago was drifting away from him like the very smoke he inhaled. Instead of whipping out his tobacco and commencing the twenty a day ritual of creating the perfect roll-up, Finlay rummaged through his jacket pocket and brought out a half empty packet of chewing gum. He popped a piece into his mouth and allowed the mint to attempt to block out his craving for the meantime, which was probably for the best or at least it was for his lungs. Before pocketing the gum, Finn performed his civil duty in offering the packet to Shane as he was generous as well as polite to those that deserved it. “I’m not saying she’s poison.” He explained, aware that he sounded like a bit of a tosser as he practically bitched about Flick, but he had good reason too. “Just… be careful. Don’t fall in love with her or anything stupid, because she’ll tear your heart right out.”

I'm coming out of my cage And I've been doing just fine Shane took a deep breath, not saying anything. A couple of moments came and went, the gears in his head turning. As he pondered this new information about Flick, Finn decided to speak up. “I’m surprised she didn’t have a cigarette in hand when you met her.” Shane had raised an eyebrow slightly, shaking his head. No, she didn't have one. All that she had with her, was a music player. A moment passed by them, as his eyes glanced around. The grounds were mostly vacant, only a couple of people still lingering. Soon enough, it would be just him and Finn. His aunt might be a little bit worried, but she would like that he made a new friend here. “I wish it wasn’t true, it’s sad to see someone as young as her screwing her life up like it doesn’t matter.”Shane nodded his head, Finn did have a good point there. A brief moment came and went, as he resisted the urge to look down at his wrists. He had been there, thinking at one point that life didn't really matter. He was just glad that his little sister didn't see him like that, during his 'incident'. It wasn't good. He inhaled slow and deep, pushing the thought..out of his mind and glanced up at Finn. "Yeah...pretty sad.." he replied, managing a slight shrug of his shoulders. Shane glanced at their surroundings once more, as his friend pulled out some gum. He slowly ran a hand through his hair, as Finn took a piece of gum out. The urge to look at his wrists had risen up again, he took a deep breath. It was a stupid mistake and he knows that..now. He looked back at Finn, taking the pack of gum he offered to him. Shane took a piece, listening as Finn spoke. “I’m not saying she’s poison.” Shane nodded his head slightly, handing the pack right back to Finn. He took the gum out of the wrapper and put it into his mouth. A few seconds passed, as he crushed the wrapped in his hand. “Just… be careful. Don’t fall in love with her or anything stupid, because she’ll tear your heart right out.” A little nod of his head, as he chewed. She was indeed attractive, he will give her that much. "Okay, thanks for the heads-up." he answered Finn. Shane did like Flick, just..as a friend.

Finlay realised that his words were penetrating his new friend further than he had intended, battering down the perception Shane had had of Felicity without as much as a second thought. However, he had felt it necessary to prevent yet another guy being strung along by the flirtatious girl, who would only drop them eventually. Around the school it was common to see her hanging out with different people all the time and Finn couldn’t decide whether she had kept a single friend from freshman to junior year. Her smoking habit was common knowledge, often sneaking off to behind the bike sheds, Flick was often seen by students and frequently caught by teachers. At least Finn could understand the persistent need for nicotine, but still, she was only sixteen. Time continued to get away from them, and Finn debated the bike ride to the other side of town where his apartment lay. It wasn’t like he had to be anywhere or do anything, he didn’t have anyone waiting for him at home to worry about his whereabouts, so he may as well enjoy the freedom.
Despite Finn’s mediumship causing multiple problems with his family and resulted in destroying it altogether, he had never sunk low enough to give up living. Some people would maybe think that he should have become at least a little depressed about the lack of love his mother had for him, but Finn was just glad to get out before his parents broke him down. Except for the yearly birthday and Christmas card from his father, he didn’t hear anything from them and in all honesty he preferred it that way. The independence had released him from the guilt he had harboured since his childhood, no longer did he feel shameful that he couldn’t be the person his mother wanted him to be.
"Yeah...pretty sad.." Finn also nodded solemnly, the sience creeping in between them as Shane processed the information and formed his new opinion of the girl he had met at the beach. "Okay, thanks for the heads-up." Finn forced a small smile as he tried to convince himself why he had started the verbal warning of someone he didn’t personally know himself, rumours weren’t exactly solid ground to go on but he thought the mess she had left his good friend in was enough to go by. “No problem, maybe she needs someone to keep her on track y’know?” He crumpled his own gum wrapper into a ball in his hand, and taking aim, threw it into the bin that was placed next to the end of the bench they were sat on. “What kind of stuff have you been up to since coming to Forks then? Anything exciting before school kicked in?”

I'm coming out of my cage And I've been doing just fine As Shane began to process this new information about Flick, he couldn't help but to think about himself for a moment or two. He had lost his mom unexpectedly a few years ago and sure, he made a mistake or two...but is it enough to give up on life entirely? Not really. But either way, he had learned his lesson and now has the scars to remind him. He inhaled slow and deep, as a silence fell in between him and Finn. He liked the guy, he is someone he can see himself hanging out with - from time to time. A breeze blew past them. His first impression of Flick may have changed, now he has learned some things from Finn, but Shane does still like her and would still want to be friends with her. That fact didn't change. Finn's little smile didn't go quite unnoticed. He had glanced up at the sky, as it started to darken. The afternoon was fading, the evening not far behind it. His aunt may get a little worried about him, she usually does. “No problem, maybe she needs someone to keep her on track y’know?” Shane looked back at his friend, his thoughts on the present again. He nodded his head, thinking that he might be right on that one. It sounds like whatever friends she makes don't last long, like they disappear on her..or something. Shane isn't that type of person, and he sorta knows from his own experience. His friends back home, they didn't stay for very long. One by one, they left him and soon he was alone. They didn't understand, not about losing a parent. A couple of moments came and went, as Finn threw his own wrapper into a nearby trash bin. Shane still held his wrapper within his hand. Then, Finn spoke. “What kind of stuff have you been up to since coming to Forks then? Anything exciting before school kicked in?” He slightly shook his head, as a brief moment passed by them. "Not really. I mean, aside from getting a job at Bella Italia and all... I've been mostly playing my guitar..." he admitted, taking his turn and throwing his gum wrapper towards the trash bin. He had missed, bounced off the edge and fell right to the ground beside the bin.

Finn seemed to be good at shattering the illusions about other people, he had a certain knack for it that he didn’t always see, but he saw it now as he watched Shane’s face change. It was only subtle, his features did not suddenly drop as though he had been hit in the face, but more the gradual realisation that his new friends was not the same one as the troubled girl at their high school. Finlay didn’t understand it, he couldn’t figure out whether felicity was playing Shane for a fool or whether she had actually turned over a new leaf; the latter of which he doubted as the age old saying said ‘a leopard did not change its spots’. He didn’t blame her for the way she had turned out, as the parents always had a strong influence on their children with the environment they were brought up in, so finn didn’t believe she had been born a bad apple. However her brother Nathan, who he believed was only a year or so older than himself, had seemed pretty normal during his time at Forks high so apparently the parents couldn’t be all to blame.
Finn didn’t know the new kid’s background, but he could at least tell that Shane had been brought up pretty well as his kind nature and good manners suggested. He didn’t know whether that was credit to his parents or guardians, either way they had done a good job, and it was rare these days to find someone so pure of heart. he often reflected back on the days he had lived with his somewhat deranged mother, and his father who mostly just went along with her for the sake of keeping the peace. Finn would wonder what they were up to, if they still lived in the same house in Seattle that had become their home after their retreat from Maine, and more importantly whether his mother still thought he contained the spirit of the devil. None of these things really mattered though, he couldn’t change anything and he supposed they preferred to think they didn’t have a son than to sit in the knowledge that they had practically exiled him from their life. He missed them like any kid would miss their parents, however much hatred or shame there was, there was still the unconditional love that came from parenthood and was passed onto the offspring like an invisible tie.
He had suffered many scars, none visible to the eye, but then the mental scars were the ones that could do the worst damage. As a result, Finlay had mentally locked a great deal of his childhood, beginning when he was only five years old and his ability was starting to surface. He had pushed the disappointment, fear and doubt that his parents had, to the very depths of his mind so they could no longer be drawn upon easily. Essentially they were forgotten, but occasionally a memory would slip through and develop into a vivid image that hurt like the day it had occurred. There was only one strong memory that he could not forget however much he had tried to do so; the day in the graveyard. It had been the most terrifying day of his life so far, at eight years old he had been subjected to the voices that had been left behind by the dead in their thoughts. They came at him from all angles, suffocating him with the sound that only penetrated his mind, and the cool mist that he didn’t need to tell him that the dead lay there. The panic and the fear from the ghosts whose bodies were buried six feet under had made him flee from the cemetery screaming, running away from both his parents and his own sister who never got to grow up. His parents had not offered the consolation that he needed, the arms wrapped around his small body to comfort him from the terror that haunted his nightmares for a long time afterwards. No. Instead, he had been accused of making the whole thing up and later of being possessed by evil spirits that had resulted in his first exorcism. His childhood was certainly something he was glad to have mostly forgotten, though he wished the most traumatic part would disappear along with the others.
"Not really. I mean, aside from getting a job at Bella Italia and all... I've been mostly playing my guitar..." Finn’s interest was piqued, the guitar was something that he had wanted to learn to play for a long time, since he was maybe ten or eleven years old, and yet he had never got around to it. He wasn’t surprised to hear Shane had got himself a job already; it was one of those essential things that only the richest kids could get away with not having, whilst they lived off their parents money during high school and sometimes even college. “I’ve heard Bella Italia pays pretty well.” He commented offhandedly, another smile gracing his face as they moved away from the topic of the estranged girl who went by the name Flick. “I’ve always wanted to play the guitar, are you any good?”

I'm coming out of my cage And I've been doing just fine The gears inside Shane's mind were turning. If this was all true about Flick, then where did he fit? Would she lead him on, like all the other guys? A part of him said no, that Flick wouldn't do that to him. But..what if? Shane bit his bottom lip, pushing the thought out of his head. Even if that is her plan in the end, he wouldn't let himself fall for it. He would not fall for her. She was indeed attractive, but Shane didn't feel that way about her. Sure, he felt nervous. But because, he's always been nervous around girls. He considered her to be a friend, and even with this new information, Shane still considers her as such. Something he said had caught Finn's attention, most likely the guitar. Shane had been playing it since he was a young kid, though he's played it more now than he used to. Shane used to hate it sometimes, getting blisters and all that. But his mom had pushed to keep practicing, until she had died. Shane stopped playing for a while, following her funeral. A final wish of hers, was that he would play his guitar. Shane did, barely finishing the song before tears fell. He then took a deep breath, as Finn spoke. “I’ve heard Bella Italia pays pretty well.” He nodded his head, a half-smile touching upon his lips. He liked his job, most of his co-workers were a good group to work with. Except for one, the hostess. Shane had a slight feeling that, she didn't like him that much. Not since he took over her job once, just for a couple of minutes. She was pissed. "Yeah.." Shane answered, his mind drifting off a bit. If he didn't, she would've gotten in trouble for not doing her job. It wasn't his fault that, she had to go mess around with a co-worker during the lunch rush. Then, Finn spoke again and Shane's thoughts had been interrupted. “I’ve always wanted to play the guitar, are you any good?” He took a deep breath, shrugging his shoulders. "Yeah? Well... it's not as easy as it looks, at first. I've been playing since I was a kid, so yeah..I guess I'm somewhat good at it.." he replied, finishing with a soft chuckle. He ran a hand through his hair and glanced away briefly. The remaining people, besides them, had left. It was just them left on school grounds, except maybe people on sports teams...and custodial staff.
